The Sailing Expert application serves as a comprehensive tool for sailors, offering capabilities that enhance navigation, manage regattas, and assist in logbook maintenance. It provides weather forecasts and a maintenance log for various boats, among other functionalities.

The application utilizes device sensors to automatically populate log entries, recording data such as location, Course Over Ground (COG), Speed Over Ground (SOG), temperature, and pressure. When a WiFi NMEA provider is available, it can leverage boat sensors instead, supporting both TCP and UDP protocols.

A companion app for Wear OS smartwatches displays instrument information directly on the wrist, further enhancing user convenience.

Navigation Features:

The application aids in navigation by providing target course guidance and alerts if deviations occur. It calculates remaining distance and estimated time of arrival (ETA). Key functions include:

Routes: Navigate using pre-defined routes.
Target: Set a specific bearing or point of interest (POI).
Passage: Plan passages using a distance-time graph method.
Startline: Assist in crossing the startline in regattas at optimal speed.

Charts:

Offline access to map data from the OpenSeaMap project or NOAA RNC.
Integration with custom map servers (e.g., OpenStreet Maps).
Ability to import local MBTiles files.
Support for calibrated scanned maps as a map source.

Weather Forecast:

The app allows users to download global weather forecasts (NOMADS GFS, DWD ICON Global) for use during expeditions.

Trip Management:

Plan trips in advance with simple check-in and check-out options for boat transfers.
Export trips or segments to CSV, GPX, and PDF formats directly from the application.
Synchronize logged data optionally with https://sail.expert.
Share trip data between devices via P2P connection over WiFi.
